The man who saw the man who saw the bear told us…that the poutine was invented at the beginning of the sixties in a little town called WARWICK, in the Bois-Francs region. It all started when a customer of the “Le Lutin Qui Rit” restaurant (on St-Louis street, in Warwick), named Jean-Guy Lainesse, asked the restaurateur (Fernand Lachance) to serve him a plate of fries with curd cheese. The restaurateur, a little surprised, said to him “ça fait toute une poutine!”
From then on customers kept asking for the same thing, so the restaurateur decided to include it on his menu, adding brown sauce to it, naming it “poutine”. During that era, the word “poutine” was often used to designate something of a funny mix.
